What's New

Did you know that?

  • In Afghanistan, the “thumbs up” sign has the same sexual connotation as the Canadian “middle finger” gesture
  • In some Asian countries touching the head is offensive because of the belief that the soul resides in the head
  • “Once” in Spanish means eleven and telling patients to use their medication “once” could result in dosing errors.

Who we are:

The Child and Women’s Health Multicultural Committee was established about 17 years ago to contribute to delivering respectful and safe health care. The committee was designed to incorporate considerations of multiculturalism and diversity within the overall functioning of Child and Women’s Health Services and to build partnerships with the multicultural community.
The committee is fortunate to have a mosaic of views represented by a diverse membership including multidisciplinary service providers, as well as representation from lay, parent and community organizations.

What we do:

The purpose of the committee is to:

  • Promote culturally competent care for children, youth and their families
  • To recognize and capitalize on the expertise of the multicultural partners and ensure that their input contributes to culturally competent and safe care

In order to effectively fulfill the purpose of the committee, some of the roles are defined as follows: advocate for diverse families; influence, support and contribute to best practices; recommend strategies to incorporate relevant culturally based research into practice; submit recommendations to administration to address multicultural issues.

Future Directions:

A Multicultural Showcase event is being planned this fall. We will  involve community agency displays, presentations on multicultural healthcare practices, tours of the new Alberta Children’s Hospital and celebrations of the many diverse groups who comprise the multicultural mosaic of Calgary. If you would like to be part of this event or would like to contribute in to the Child & Women’s Health Multicultural committee, please contact Linda Kongnetiman at 955-7742
